The Director of Nursing (DON), Comprehensive Cancer Center, reports to the Chief Nursing Officer at the Winston-Salem campus for nursing practice and operations of assigned inpatient units, and for nursing practice oversight in procedural areas, outpatient multi-specialty clinics on the Winston Salem campus and in associated network locations. The Comprehensive Cancer Center DON has matrix reporting relationships to the Vice President and Administrative Director, Oncology Service Line.


Job Description

Through multi-disciplinary collaboration, the DON coordinates operational planning, systems assessment and analysis, and program development for oncology services in the Comprehensive Cancer Center to ensure consistency with the mission and values of the organization and collaborates closely with the Administrative Director, Oncology Service Line, for marketing, information management, and strategic planning.

The DON responds to the needs of the staff reporting to this position by assisting in the supervision, interviewing and selection of new staff members. Under the oversight of the DON, delegated supervisory personnel participate in employee performance evaluations, orientation and training. The DON works closely with the medical staff to assure appropriate utilization of resources (staff, facilities, supplies, and systems) to accomplish the highest quality of patient care in a cost-effective manner.

The DON functions as a professional manager of resources and environment, as well as a facilitator of the clinical practice of nursing. Provision is made for the development of activities and standards which assure that plans of care are made for each patient in accordance with the age and development needs of the patient and with the medical plan of care. Department policy and organizational goals and objectives provide the framework for these activities. The DON is responsible for all aspects of nursing care and demonstrates organizational commitment to ethical and professional behavior by serving as a role model for hospital values to staff, providers, and patients. Maintains appropriate confidentiality of privileged information. Participates in activities to promote professional growth and development.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Graduate of an accredited college of nursing

  • Master’s or Doctorate in Nursing required

  • Continuing education of 30 hours or more annually

  • Doctorate of Nursing Practice preferred

Experience:

  • Minimum of five years of applicable and progressive managerial experience with Oncology Specialty in an Academic Medical Center
